Every year it's become a bit of a tradition that I make some sort of black forest variation for Glenn's birthday. Last year it was a
tart, and this year it was a trifle. I really like trifles, and make them all the time. They're easy, impressive and there are endless ways to make them. They're also completely fool-proof, who has ever heard of a screwed up trifle (except for on Friends, no beef or onions in this!).
What really kicked this up for me was the glaze I used. It soaks right into the cake and moistens everything up with a mouthwatering chocolatey sweetness. Mmmmm, it's the type of thing you wake up wanting to eat for breakfast!
Black Forest TrifleIngredientsDevils Food Cake, prepared
can of cherry pie filling
whipped cream
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup milk
5 tablespoons butter
6 oz or 1 cup choc chips
DirectionsCube cake into small pieces. In a small sauce pan, combine sugar, milk and margarine. Bring to a boil. Boil 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, stir chocolate chips until smooth. In a trifle bowl, layer 1/3 of cake in bottom of pan. Pour 1/3 of the glaze on top of cake, and 1/3 of the cherries. Repeat layers and garnish top with whipped cream. Best if served next to some vanilla ice cream!
