Do you ever make a dinner, that's so good that you feel like the household culinary champ of the world? It's not too often that I make a dish that every single person in my family not just likes, but absolutely loves, sending them back for seconds. This was that meal for us, and I know that it's nothing fancy and new, but let me just tell you about these meatballs.
I had made meatballs in the past, and was totally turned off by them. Since I browned them before baking them, I felt like I was basically eating spaghetti, with big hunks of burger on top, and it wasn't very good. So, I didn't make any for a while. But when I got my Newman's Own Spaghetti sauce, I thought it might be fun to give meatballs another chance.
I found a great meatball recipe on
recipezaar. Nothing fancy, just your regular meatball ingredients. But I didn't brown them this time, instead, I rolled them into balls and placed them on a cooling rack, on top of my baking sheet, which was covered in foil to catch all the fat that the meatballs rendered off when baking. The result were soft, flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth meatballs that my family couldn't stop eating. They were also wonderful as sandwiches in your favorite marinara a few meals later. These are a definite new favorite at our house.
And the Newman's Own sauce? Not bad! I'm normally not one for jarred spaghetti sauces, I always feel like they are too sweet and lacking a lot of flavor, but this stuff was much more robust and full of great flavor. I still added a bunch of minced onion and garlic, but I just can't help myself there! I also used some of it for a Shepherd's pie that I'll post soon. I'm all about the classics right now baby!

Newman's is so great. I love the salad dressings too!
Way to go champ! I love those kinds of meals. I actually always buy jarred spaghetti sauce as a base and "doctor" them up to the way I like it. They are a great convenience for me. I'll have to try Newman's. Thanks for the great recipe!
I'm with you...not such a fan of fried meatballs. I like the baked ones better! It also doesn't help that they're healthier. This recipe looks delicious. And I love Newman's own sauces - they are the only jarred pasta sauces I'll buy!
Ooo...a meatball sandwich sounds sooo good right about now. With a nice melted cheese right on top. Mmmmm...
Yum, this is my favourite way to do meatballs too. Great idea to line with foil - less soaking later.
I think I have a jar of that very sauce in my cupboard. Better put it to use. My hubby makes a great meatball sammy...he'll have to post it for me sometime.
I made meatballs for the first time last year. I also really like them baked. Your sandwich looks delicious!
I love baking meatballs. It's so much easier and the meatballs don't break up or anything like that. I could totally go for a huge plate of your spaghetti and meatballs right now;D
I have never used Newman's sauces. His dressings, but not sauces. Glad to hear they are really good, now I'll try them.
Your spaghetti looks divine. And cooking the meatballs in the oven was a great idea. I've always fried them too.
You go, Champ!
How did you know I was craving meatballs? Sweet wounded wuffles.
I'm glad you found something that everyone in your family loves!! That is so awesome. Those meatballs do look fantastic. We love meatballs, too. I will have to try these.
My hubby's been begging for spaghetti and meatballs. This looks so yummy.
I almost always bake my meatballs too - they seem to come out more tender. I'm glad you gave them a go again. I couldn't imagine life without meatballs!
Can't ever go wrong with spaghetti and meatballs - yum!
Great photos! I've never thought of baking meatballs...but then again, I've never made meatballs! Sounds better than greasy fried burger meat, though. And I didn't even know Newman's Own made past sauce. I've only had the salsa and dressing. Must try that!
(Thanks for your kind words by the way. You are so sweet!)
You go girl! LOL, I might have gotten that feeling after a dinner or two! :)It feels real good! I'm going to have to check out your meatball recipe! From your review its a winner and I've never made my own meatballs before.

I adore meatballs, but not necessarily with spaghetti. The good thing is, they make SUCH great leftovers...and I love your little sandwich with it, too!
Looks delicious and this is my favorite dish ever!!!! We all eat this too...no one here ever turns their nose up at spaghetti and meatballs. I am going to try your meatball recipe the next time I make it. I usually make a large batch of meatballs and sauce and freeze some of it for another time. It freezes well!
Now you have me wanting spaghetti and meatballs. Baking them is so much easier to clean up than frying. YUM!
That is a great feeling! This looks so good. I may have to give these a try!
I too bake my meatballs....so much better and they 'stand out' distinct from the sauce...AND...bonus...not so greasy. Yummers!
This seriously is what Jonathan requests EVERY time I ask him, "what do you want for dinner this week?" I always laugh b/c I've never made it, and now I can b/c I have an official tried and true recipe!!! Won't he be surprised??
I truly believe baking is KEY to good meatballs! I always bake mine. Newman's own products are AMAZING- their sauces, their salsa ah! SO good! Great plate- glad the family loved it ;)
This is comfort food for me! I'll have to try Newman's spaghetti sauce.
I enjoy making meatballs but I've not made them in forever. The best part are meatball sandwiches with the leftovers!
I'm with you...I am not always that big on jarred sauce, but there are some out there that I do like! Your spaghetti & meatballs look yummy!
This is the way to cook meatballs! Quick, easy and no mess. When I'm in a hurry I use Newman's Own too. A little doctoring and it tastes like homemade. Now I'm thinking "meatball sandwich."
I had to pull my bbq meatballs out of the freezer because of this post!
Soo yummy! Sockarooni is my fave jarred pasta sauce!
What I wouldn't give to have a bountiful platter of spaghetti and meatballs right now. This looks maddeningly good!
Looks fabulous... sorry I haven't been around for awhile, I moved to the US Virgin Islands (I still giggle when I say that) for six months, and it is taking awhile to get settled. But i do think I am caught up, and will be back reading each of your new posts as usual...
Come take a look at my new blogs of Island life!
Nothing better than spaghetti and meatballs... except maybe that sandwich!
Wow; you are a culinary champ! Those meatballs look amazing...great job!
